When the tough gets going, the Toon and their army go missing. There’s a war on but Newcastle are still too pre-occupied with their own civil strife to give it proper consideration or fight. Saturday’s crowd of 44,935 was the lowest of the year at St James’ and probably the quietest. Only when at half-time and full-time whistle did they rouse themselves to deliver a cacophony of booing. It is a chicken-and-egg debate whether their subdued state was a reflection of the subdued performance of the team or vice versa.
