NUFC 2-0 Boro - 10pts clear at Xmas. No team can f*ck that up…
So another home game, another victory, another clean sheet and another goal each for Marlon and Shola put us ten points clear at the top of the Championship. WBA’s match was postponed on Saturday giving us the chance to extend our lead, and we did just that relatively comfortably on a baltic Sunday lunchtime at SJP.
Boro had large parts of the first half but didn’t really threaten, and it was United who took the lead in controversial circumstances when Shola blatently pushed Pogatetz in the back before beating Brad Jones to the ball and teeing up Marlon Harewood for a tap-in. Boro came close themselves when Steven Taylor appeared to handle the ball onto the post then into Harper’s hands, but after that the Toon were comfortable, with Coloccini particularly outstanding at the back.
In the second half, United dominated posession, and got their second goal when a magnificent cross from the restored Danny Guthrie set up Shola for a good header into the Gallowgate net.
In all, it was another routine victory for the boys in front of a record Championship attendance of 49,600 - just 400 short of that 50k mark, which surely would have been passed were it not for the heavy snowfall on Saturday.
