IT’S UNBELIEVABLE - WOOLFORD

The Iron’s man for the big occasion Martyn Woolford said that his two-goal haul in the win over Newcastle United was one of the best moments of his career so far.

However, even though the ex-York man was thrilled to be the match-winner for Scunthorpe in front of a record Glanford Park crowd of 8,921, he still regards scoring the promotion clinching goal in the League One play-off final over Millwall in May to win promotion to the Championship as the pinnacle.

The 24-year-old, back in the team on Tuesday because Michael O’Connor was serving a one-match suspension, was quick to praise the Iron faithful and expressed his delight at being able to reward them by playing a key part in a landmark victory for the club against one of the biggest teams in the country.

“It’s unbelievable,” Woolford told The Iron Player.

“This is one of the biggest games of my career to play against a club like Newcastle and to get both goals is overwhelming, yet a fantastic feeling.

“Comparing that to Wembley is a tough call. If I had to pick out one I’d say Wembley but the atmosphere for the Newcastle game was very good.”

“The fans sang their hearts out and to beat a team like Newcastle United is definitely the second best moment of my career so far,” he smiled.

“There was a record crowd here and even when Newcastle were getting on top at times the fans always spurred us on and hopefully they can continue to do that throughout the course of the season.

“I wanted to make sure that I was ready for this game after sitting out a few matches and I wanted to impress.

“I think I might have tried too hard to start with and gave a few passes away, so there’s still a lot of improvement to come from me but it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet - sometimes your mistakes are forgotten about when you score goals.”
