NUFC 4th biggest crowd at the weekend

NEWCASTLE United boss Chris Hughton and hat-trick hero Shola Ameobi have thanked the 37,000-strong Toon Army after they recorded the fourth-highest crowd in the country during Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Reading. Only the turnouts at Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton surpassed that of the figure at St.James’ Park over the weekend. And afterwards sideline sergeant Hughton and goal-ace Ameobi were united in their praise for the “magnificent” black-and-white following. “It’s incredible,” the pair agreed before Hughton continued, “They never fail to amaze you and we must thank them for that.

“They have turned out in their thousands and have supported the team from the first whistle. “We’re delighted we gave them something to shout about and we hope to do the same against Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night.”

And Ameobi echoed those sentiments as he called for another big gate against The Owls. “It’s a massive boost for the players and to get one of the biggest crowds in the country in the second tier is magnificent,” he said.

“I think everyone enjoyed Saturday and let’s hope we have another good night against Sheff Wed.”
