Harry Redknapp: Candle-faced kernt…

A propos nothing at all, here are some, entirely random, quotes from Harry Redknapp:

“Samba’s a good player. A real good player. I like the pair of them”

When asked about Chris Samba and Gary Cahill - neither of them Spurs players

Demba Ba’s done great hasn’t he? Everybody’s looking at him suddenly.

Newcastle United’s Demba Ba that is

I’ve always liked him. I think he’s a fantastic goalscorer. I wouldn’t stand here and say, ‘No, never’ because if I signed him, you’d say I was lying

On Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka

We have had good reports of what is obviously a good player. But he belongs to Celtic and that’s as far as it’s gone

On Celtic’s James Forrest

Drogba is a top player, a fantastic player, so, who knows? I couldn’t sit here and say we wouldn’t be interested

On Chelsea’s Didier Drogba

Yes, I like him. He’s a fabulous player and would be a brilliant addition to any team. It was put to us that he might be available, but we’ve not made contact with his club Sevilla and, to be perfectly honest, I haven’t sat down to discuss any transfer targets with our chairman Daniel Levy, apart from trying to do a deal with Joe Cole.

On Sevilla’s Luis Fabiano and Chelsea’s (at the time) Joe Cole

I would not want to be putting the chairman under any pressure to buy Pienaar but at £2 million to £3 million, he’s certainly not dear, is he?

On Everton’s Steven Pienaar

The chairman is talking. I don’t get involved on that side of it. I identify a player and the chairman does everything else. I like him very much. He is young with a good future

On Newcastle’s Seb Bassong

I like ‘Crouchie’ and I would take him any day of the week. But I just don’t know whether Liverpool would be willing to sell him.

On Liverpool’s Peter Crouch

There’ll be more. I just can’t be arsed to any more. Knob.

Match Preview & Predictions - QPR (H) - Premier League - 15/01/2012 - 13:30

On the back of two home games, comes an unusual third in a row this Sunday.

Live on Sky for the second time in quick succession we face the now Colin Wanker-less ‘Super Hoops’ at home.

“The Joey Barton Show” and Traore are set to miss out for them, along with Ba and Tiote for us.  Danny Simpson was taken off with a slight shoulder injury on Saturday.

Our Thoughts:

@therealrobbo: - The focus will be more on QPR for this tie, and this may play into our hands, they currently lie 3pts off the bottom in 17th place have sacked Colin Wanker and Sparky Hughes is currently favourite to jump into the Loftus Road hot seat.

This begins a tough looking run of games for QPR who after our game head into a 6-pointer with Wigan at home on the 21st, then an away game at Villa and a home game v Wolves, topped off with a tricky trip to Blackburn which also proves to be another 6-pointer.

By the middle of February the seasons outcome maybe a lot clearer for QPR.

I think with QPR missing a few key players will benefit a NUFC without Ba and Tiote and I think this game will be won or lost in the midfield, we pummelled Blackburn on Saturday and think Pardew will have the team perfectly prepared following the learning’s from Saturday.

I think there were some positives to take from Saturdays game in Ba’s and Tiote’s absence and I think we can win our 3rd game on the bounce Sunday.

Prediction: I will go for a 1-0 / 2-0 win to United, with Ben Arfa to find the net again at some point.

@rammlet: - I’d take a win of any sort here, scrappy or otherwise. Ben Arfa has to start on the right for me, with Shola and Best up top. Guthrie would come in for Tiote if fit, otherwise I’d be tempted to go with Abeid, he looked tidy on Saturday.

Keep Obertan for the last 20 mins when they’re tired and let him stretch them with his pace.

Prediction: I’ll take a scruffy 1-0 please.

@mattypnufc: - I’m with Gaz on this.  3 points in any shape or form and I’ll be a happy lad.

Obviously they’ve been on a bit of a bad run of games recently, and their form will not be helped with the absence of Joey, but they may well suffer from ‘New Manager’ syndrome if someone is in place by the weekend which would make it more difficult than people are expecting.

I still think, even with the absence of Ba & Tiote we should be a little too strong going forward for Anton and co to deal with.

I just hope our fans don’t start to hum and har at every missed pass or scuffed shot.  Let’s get behind the lads!

Prediction: 2-0 for me, Shola and Ben Arfa.

NUFC 2-1 BRFC

Newcastle advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup yesterday with a tight 2-1 victory over Steve Kean’s Blackburn.

Pardew shuffled his pack, with Ben Arfa partnering Best up front, and Mehdi Abeid starting in the middle with Yohan Cabaye.

United started brightly again, with chances for Cabaye, Best and Ben Arfa all going awry, before Blackburn hit United with the old sucker punch, when Morten Gamst Pedersen’s corner was bundled home eventually by David Goodwillie.

A frustrating afternoon seemed to be heading for another early exit from the cup, before a change from Pardew galvanised his stuttering army. Shola was introduced for the very poor Obertan (the substation of whom was embarrassingly cheered by sections of the healthy 30k crowd) and Ben Arfa was pushed wide right.

The change paid dividends, as Ben Arfa seemingly felt the weight of the world off his shoulders, and began tearing Blackburn apart out wide, culminating in a goal which, without even a hint of hyperbole, would not have looked out of place if scored by Lionel Messi.

Barfa picked the ball up centrally, beat three men before advancing into the area. Despite almost losing possession, he managed to roll his foot over the ball, and cut back inside onto his left before smashing an unstoppable strike past Blackburn keeper Bunn.

It was a truly magnificent goal, later described by Pardew as the best he’d ‘ever seen’ - and the day was capped when time-wasting and crowd baiting by Bunn was punished in the best manner possible, as Jonas played a one-two with Leon Best before dinking the ball over the keeper into the net in the 94th minute.

It was a deserved, if unspectacular, victory for the Mags, but we are in the hat for the next round, and the displays of Ben Arfa, Jonas, Davide Santon and the home debut of Mehdi Abeid were all worthy of note as we await the fourth round draw at 1730 on Sunday.

Match Preview & Predictions - Blackburn (H) - FA Cup - 07/01/2012 - 15:00

In a new weekly feature, starting today, we will gauge opinions and predictions from all three of us of the week’s forthcoming game and perhaps a few of the other games too.

As everyone knows, the FA Cup Third round takes place this weekend and countless replays of THAT bloody goal will be shown across the country.

In the oldest and best domestic cup competition we are facing fellow Premier League opposition Blackburn Rovers on an unusually fashionable 3pm kick off.

In our past three years in the competition, we have progressed just once (Plymouth - 2010) and have been knocked out twice (Stevenage - 2011 & Hull - 2009).

Our thoughts:

@therealrobbo – If we play a good strength squad I think we will have a good chance to progress, I’m sure Blackburn would prefer to concentrate on their relegation battle so it could be a good chance for some of the ‘2nd’ teamers to strut their stuff.

Prediction: I would think there might be a few shocks but can see us winning 2-0 or 2-1 but I don’t think it will be as the league game was last year when we pummelled them.

Other games are obviously the Manchester Derby (Man City to win) and I think the Mackems will also win at Peterborough.

@rammlet - No doubt this will be a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ with the brilliant midweek win being followed up with a poor performance.

It doesn’t matter though as long as we go through, and Steve Kean and his Venky’s may well be focussing on staying in the division.

Prediction: 2-1 NUFC with Morten Gamst Pedersen scoring for them, as always.

@mattypnufc - I can see us winning this one.  Blackburn should be concentrating on the league and will be putting priorities on trying to stay up.

That said, we’ll play a less than full strength team, but it should be enough to see us get through.

With our place in the league looking quite rosy, there’s no reason why we can’t try and have a decent cup run for a change.

Prediction: Like the other lads, a scrappy but deserving 2-1 win.

"Newcastle were sensational. They had every attribute for a team performance, but everything will worry Sir Alex Ferguson after this result. I expected a wounded animal after his team lost to Blackburn"

– Alan Hansen delivers a shocking but accurate quote.
